Sustainable Ocean Production
Aquahub Mangrove Crab - Philippines
Community-based aquaculture project in the Philippines that focuses on sustainable mangrove crab farming.
The project in the Philippines aims to establish a sustainable mangrove crab production system to combat overexploitation of wild stocks of mangrove crabs, address deforestation of mangroves, and create direct jobs and incomes for more than 250 coastal households.
The project includes a hatchery/nursery facility, a livelihood enhancement programme for communities, and a mangrove nursery. While early in its implementation, the project has made progress in establishing a dedicated entity 'Aquahub Philippines’ and recruiting a local management team, signing agreements with local farmers, engaging national and international experts, and successfully completing 2 cycles of crab grow-outs in 3 farms.
