archiREEF
Archireef utilizes robotics and its proprietary algorithm for its nature-based solution: producing terracotta-printed artificial reef tiles that aid threatened marine life.
It employs artificial intelligence, 3D printing, and IoT to create the tiles that can be customized to adapt to different organisms and environments.
Through the integration of the biomimicry element, the reef structure can achieve increased coral survivorship and connect isolated coral reef communities.
The company works toward mobilizing blue carbon for carbon neutrality and restoring marine ecosystems that have been degraded through its sustainable tech.
How the solution works: Site selection - The restoration site and project scope are screened and defined. Reef tiles deployment - The seafloor is tiled with ocean-friendly reef structures.
Marine organisms and corals are seeded to encourage regrowth. Performance monitor - The firm looks at the condition of outplanted corals and assesses the performance of the tiles based on success parameters. The reef tiles were first adopted for restoring the corals in Hoi Ha Wan Marine Park, specifically the coral beach in its park, the sheltered bay by the WWF marine life education facility, and Moon Island.
The project is in partnership with the HKSAR Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department.
