Blue Barriers
SEADS-Sea Defence Solutions has developed the Blue Barriers in order to prevent plastic waste from reaching the oceans. The Blue Barriers are made from recycled polyethylene and were created to collect plastic waste in rivers, thereby protecting the oceans. In addition, their barriers can collect microplastics in waterways without harming marine life and are easy to maintain.
Gathered plastic waste is also recycled as a means to reduce the startup's environmental impact.
Other key advantages of the Blue Barriers include: Its technologies were developed to enhance local waste management. Its barriers do not interfere with cargo ships and boats.
Their technologies can be reused in other locations or in conjunction with other barriers. Its barriers can be used in flood-prone areas. Multiple partnerships have been formed, including with the University of the West of Scotland, Politecnico di Milano, and the University of Indonesia, among others. In 2019, SEADS was able to conduct a pilot installation of its barriers on the Lamone River in Italy.
The startup is also seeking partners and donations in an effort to upscale its technologies.
