Exuma Cays Land & Sea Park
Exuma Cays Land & Sea Park is one of the first marine reserve and land & sea parks in the world. It is a biodiversity park established in 1958, to preserve the natural resources of the Caribbean Island and simultaneously encourage tourism.
In early 1950s, there was a sharp decline observed in the population of West Indian Flamingos. Along with it, there was also reported a depletion of the natural resources on the island.
With a mission to preserve the Exuma chain, Ilya Tolstoy, gathered a group of forward-thinking conversationists and formed the land & sea park. The Park is spread across an area of 112,640 acres of land and sea.
The area is known for its scenic beauty, biodiversity and secluded beaches. Living up to the principles of a national park, the Exuma Cays Land & Sea Park commits to be a defender of the environment. By preserving the beauty for the future generations as well as saving the area from the current effects of climate change, the park prides itself in sustainability and conservation efforts.
The area includes about 32 parks so far and the number is ever-increasing, and this includes parks ranging from marine parks to creek reserves.
