Green Fins
Green Fins in an initiative of UNEP and The Reef-World Foundation which focuses on driving environmentally friendly scuba diving and snorkelling practices across the industry globally.
The initiative supports governments and businesses towards adopting reef positive business models through the implementation of a unique conservation management approach that leads to a measurable reduction in the negative environmental impacts associated with the marine tourism industry.
Green Fins implementation teams award marine tourism operations green certification based on ongoing compliance to a code of conduct which is measured through a robust assessment process to identify risks posed to coral reefs both above and below the water. Participating dive and snorkel companies are offered practical, low-cost alternatives to harmful practices - such as anchoring, direct diver damage, fish feeding and chemical pollution - and provides strategic training, support and resources to governments, businesses and individuals who are in a position to act.
The Green Fins approach is replicable and has been adopted by more than 1,200 marine tourism companies in 270 diving hotspots across 70 countries globally. Reef-World has supported the governments of the following 15 countries to implement Green Fins as a national initiative: Antigua and Barbuda, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Egypt, Indonesia, Japan, Jordan, Malaysia, the Maldives, Palau, the Philippines, Singapore, Timor-Leste, Thailand and Vietnam.
