Unsustainable Tourism

Kunawa Getaway Beach Site is a community‑run eco‑tourism initiative that channels visitor revenue into locally led reef stewardship at Lelehudi’s near‑shore fringing reef (“Kunawa Point”). The business model integrates day‑use recreation, venue hire & catering, guided marine‑awareness activities, and overnight stays, creating dependable cashflow to fund mangrove restoration and regular reef monitoring by community teams. Through a US$46,865.94(PGK 196,415.17 Blue Economy Enterprise Incubation Facility performance‑based grant, Kunawa is upgrading core infrastructure, perimeter fencing with solar lighting, a multipurpose conference/kitchen house, three bungalows and sanitation, and provisioning a mangrove nursery, a dinghy for safer water access, and simple reef‑monitoring kits. These upgrades strengthen guest experience and expand livelihoods (including roles for women and youth) while embedding conservation practice.
