Hero background
Disease & Invasive Species

LionFish Gem is an initiative led by Richards Arts, a Raizal enterprise that seeks to generate environmental and socio-economic impact through the artisanal use of lionfish (Pterois volitans), an invasive species that threatens marine biodiversity in the Colombian Caribbean.

The project proposes an innovative solution grounded in circular economy principles, gender empowerment, and cultural identity by transforming lionfish fins into artisanal jewelry. At the same time, it focuses on training and strengthening Raizal women as producers, entrepreneurs, and environmental stewards.

The project’s objective is to consolidate the Richards Arts workshop as a leader in the sustainable use of resources associated with lionfish, generating income opportunities for the community while motivating increased lionfish harvesting activities. This approach supports the preservation and recovery of coral reef ecosystems, encourages broad community involvement, and helps preserve traditional Raizal practices through innovative, culturally rooted products.
