Overfishing and Destructive Fishing

Ocean Outcomes uses a business-driven, triple impact approach to tackle the challenges faced by small-scale fishers across the world. The organization focuses on building a healthy aquatic ecosystem, a profitable seafood supply, and flourishing fishing communities.

To solve multiple problems including a deteriorating aquatic system, the financial issues for fishers, and unorganized seafood supply, Ocean Outcomes, a non-profit organization lays out a unique approach and uses different tools.

The triple impact fisheries approach focuses on harnessing untapped financing and increasing profitability in small-scale fishing enterprises. It will improve livelihoods and the health of the ecosystem while creating a positive loop for people and the planet.

The organization has built a Triple-Impact Fisheries Evaluation Framework to increase the viability and decrease the risk of fisheries improvement by evaluating, tracking, and incentivizing the improvement of fisheries’ social and financial performance. The Evaluation Framework is based on three tools: The Environmental Rapid Assessment (ERA) tool is a publicly available tool for rapidly evaluating the environmental sustainability of wild capture fisheries.

The Social Responsibility Assessment tool for the seafood sector, is used as a diagnostic or rapid fishery assessment tool to assess the risk of social issues, identify areas that need improvement, and inform the development of a Fishery Improvement Project (FIP) workplan. The Financial Rapid Assessment is a tool designed to assess the business capacity of seafood enterprises.

They have been running a project in Latin America where countries such as Chile, Peru, and Ecuador have witnessed a rise in fish consumption. Working with partners on the ground, including SmartFish and Conservation International, as well as relevant stakeholders, they are piloting a triple bottom line seafood approach in Guayana, Costa Rica, and Mexico.
