Reef Ball
Reef Ball is an artificial reef module that possesses a similar structure and function as a natural reef. The organization works with the mission to rehabilitate and protect the ocean ecosystem of the world through the development and use of ecologically sound-designed reefs and related systems.
The worldwide decline of reefs is an indicator that world ocean systems are at a tipping point. The organization focuses on preserving and restoring reefs by designing artificial reefs. These artificial modules are made with special concrete additives Reef Ball concrete, with a pH similar to sea water which assures compatibility with marine environments and enhances its attractiveness to colonizing organisms.
The hollow interior space provides habitat and shelter for marine species. The addition of coral plugs allows quick initiation of growth and rescue of corals damaged by dredging etc. The;Reef Balls remain undamaged and stable in the highest-rated storms. These are made using a reef ball fiberglass mold system which is light and can be assembled with basic tools anywhere. The voids are made with buoys and tether balls that can be shipped easily anywhere. The Reef Balls are beneficial for oyster habitat, estuaries, fisheries, mangrove restoration, anti-trawling devices, and lobster culture.
