ReefSystems
ReefSystems wants to provide innovative solutions to enhance nature by developing modular systems that could help restore ecosystems and encourage biodiversity.
They work closely with ecologists, research institutes, and other organizations from the same sector in order to fulfill their mission to:
- Stimulate biodiversity above and under water
- Add ecological value to water construction projects
- Create the right conditions for the restoration of nature
- Reduce construction projects' carbon dioxide emissions
They created the Modular Sealife System, or MOSES, a modular building system that can be installed in waterways or in the ocean, and serves as a home for marine life.
They also developed the Sheet Pile Eco-Territorial Reinforcement, or SPECTER, a multi-layered hanging case that allows aquatic plants to grow. The company has collaborated with Reef2Reef Foundation Panama for the installation of MOSES-reefs, where Stanghorn corals will be planted, and has installed SPECTERs for Gemeente Utrecht in the Netherlands, which plans to create a cultural hotspot in the area. With the help of the startup, the REEFolution Kenya project began its plans to restore the coral reefs in Shimoni, Kenya, that have been damaged by dynamite fishing.
The artificial reefs will provide habitat for coral and marine life.ReefSystems has been a part of several accelerator programs, including BeStart, Startup In Residence Program, Postcode Lotteries Green Challenge and Climate-KIC.
These programs allowed them to gain new skills, meet mentors and improve their products.
