Regenerative Travel
Regenerative Travel is a shared benefit corporation and booking platform providing marketing and hospitality services to a network of over 50 independently owned eco-luxury boutique hotels dedicated to high levels of social and environmental impact located in over 24 countries worldwide.
Through sharing individual best practices and through collaboration, Regenerative Travel enables the Regenerative Resorts hotel collection to work together to achieve economies of scale and to make a deeper impact. The founders, David Leventhal and Amanda Ho, started the company in 2019 with a shared passion for offering value-driven experiences that drive environmental impact.
As of 2021, all member hotels must commit to data collection, share best practices with other hotels, and benchmark tools through a streamlined technology solution (using a third-party data collection tool, Greenview - https://greenview.sg/) with analytics and reporting.
Regenerative Resorts have also opened up a new level of membership for "Aspiring" properties who do not meet the full minimum criteria but show a desire and willingness to improve by committing to data collection for six months. The company selects hotels to be a part of the collective on the basis of pre-defined standards for regenerative practices. These standards require that all hotels monitor their water use, energy use, waste production, and avoid single-use plastic.
For example, one of their founding hotels, Playa Viva in Mexico, took into account the history of the location and its role as a steward of the land and confronted the problem of turtle poaching and poor schools in the village during the hotel’s construction. As a result of regenerative design, the small town of Juluchuca became a gateway to the property and the hotel developed an organic agricultural system that benefited both the property and local residents.
A 2 percent fee is added to every stay at the hotel, which funds a trust that invests in community development. An indicator of the success of Playa Viva that Regenerative Travel reports is that teenagers are choosing to stay or are moving back to the village as a result of these efforts.
The website also hosts monthly webinar series on trends in ecotourism and regenerative travel, with the latest one on ‘Future of travel in 2021.’ Additionally, the company hosts an annual ‘Climate Week’ summit with speakers across sustainable travel and lifestyle industries.
