Remora Fishing Traceability
ImagineXYZ is a startup from Costa Rica that develops the REMORA Fishing Traceability tools.
The products are created in order to monitor small-scale fishing activities in an effort to discourage illegal fishing and protect marine wildlife and ecosystems.
The product is comprised of the following solutions: Vessel Monitoring System- these devices are installed to fishing boats and vessels to monitor their locations and the areas where they fish. They provide real-time telemetry data such as type of vessel, fuel granted, and permit given.
Smart Scale- this is an Internet of Things device (IoT) that is used to analyze dimensions of the fish caught, and these are tagged to the fisherman and the boat that caught it for traceability purposes. Whatsfish Mobile App- this smartphone app allows consumers to connect with the fishermen who caught their fish, as well as where they’re caught. This attempts to satisfy consumers who may wonder where their food comes from.
Fishing Data Platform- this platform collects data from the monitoring devices and creates visualizations to determine the status of fishing in various areas. These details can help determine whether overfishing or illegal fishing is occurring in fishing sites. Imagine XYZ has joined several contests for the product including Fishackathon 2016, Hardware Co. and World Ocean Summit in 2017.
The first REMORA tracking device prototype was created in 2018. It also conducted a pilot test in the same year.
