Strengthening the Fruit and Vegetable Processing Plant Through a Circular Economy Model for Organic Fertilizer Production and Marketing in San Andrés Island
This proposal, led by the Raizal Youth Organization, presents a comprehensive solution based on circular economy principles and a triple-impact approach encompassing environmental, economic, and social dimensions. Its main objective is to transform organic waste generated by the organization’s fruit and vegetable processing plant, as well as waste from selected hotels and households, into high-quality organic fertilizers.
In addition to significantly reducing the volume of organic waste currently sent to the Magic Garden landfill, the initiative aims to strengthen the production of agricultural bio-inputs and consolidate a local commercialization strategy. The project proposes the establishment of a biofactory that will produce and distribute both solid and liquid organic fertilizers, such as compost, effective microorganisms, and bioferments, targeting local farmers, school gardens, public institutions, nurseries, and island-based businesses. These products will progressively replace imported chemical fertilizers, which are costly and harmful to local ecosystems.
