The Guardian
The Guardian is an undersea robot that can capture invasive lionfish that are destroying the biodiversity in the Atlantic. The Robots in Service of the Environment (RSE), a non-profit organization, aims to create environmental solutions by building and developing robots.
The company developed this widely deployable and economically self-sustaining solution to help cull the lionfish population in the western Atlantic. Driving The Guardian is user friendly, with the controller only weighing 20 lbs. The Guardian has stunning panels with a low, controlled voltage that temporarily stuns the fish, long enough for it to be captured in the chamber.
The chamber is able to hold up to 30lb of lionfish at a time, making each diving session impactful. It is the company's goal to not only produce robots that capture lionfish, but that the operator of the device will be economically rewarded for capturing them.
The emerging demand for lionfish meat will encourage fishermen or large fish operations to purchase The Guardian, and sell their lionfish catches into the seafood supply chain in order to fill that demand. In turn, there is an incentive to help cull the invasive lionfish.
