Van Oord’s Coral Regeneration Initiative
Mobile coral regeneration laboratory and nursery
Van Oord's Coral Regeneration Initiative is a project of Van Oord, a Dutch international marine contractor.
The Initiative aims to rehabilitate corals in various locations worldwide as part of its efforts to protect marine ecosystems and make natural resources sustainable.Parts of the initiative include:
- ReefGuard: is an aquaculture laboratory that is designed to breed and grow corals. It serves as a facility where corals are bred and grown until they are ready to be transferred to the Coral Engine, which is located under the water.
- Coral Engine: is an on-location underwater nursery that contains various coral fragments which then continue to grow and develop underwater, making them easy to transplant wherever necessary.
Van Oord’s Coral Regeneration Initiative has been deployed numerous times, specifically in the Bahamas and in Australia. This initiative allows the company, along with the help of various stakeholders, to speed up regeneration of marine environments after undertaking underwater projects such as dredging.
