Business Trends in Marine Conservation in Latin America

Oceans absorb heat & CO2 but face threats like coral loss, overfishing, & plastic.

The world's oceans, covering 71% of the Earth's surface, play a crucial role in fighting climate change. They store vast amounts of heat and absorb over 90% of additional heat and 25% of CO2 emissions since the industrial revolution.

Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) region, with the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, aim to protect 30% of marine ecosystems by 2030. LAC's coastal areas provide essential services like coastal protection and support key industries such as fisheries and tourism.

However, LAC faces challenges from climate change impacts, including coral decline, ocean acidification, illegal fishing, and plastic pollution. These threats harm livelihoods and economic growth, with LAC losing around US$1 billion annually to illegal fishing.

Conservation efforts are crucial to combat climate change, preserve biodiversity, and sustain the blue economy. By addressing these challenges, LAC can safeguard its marine resources, protect livelihoods, and ensure sustainable development in the region.
