GFCR Gender Policy
Gender equality and women’s empowerment is a strategic and operational imperative for the Global Fund for Coral Reefs (GFCR).
The GFCR Global Gender Policy closely aligns with the numerous international commitments, resolutions and declarations addressing gender, climate change and sustainable development2 , including the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with their explicit commitment to gender equality and women´s empowerment in SDG 5 as a standalone goal as well as a necessary condition to achieve all other SDGs (including SDG 14 on Life Below Water).
The Gender Policy was prepared by taking into consideration the policies, strategies and best practices of UN agencies, financial institutions and private philanthropies that are partner to the Fund and others . It also includes evidence from current research on gender equality in coral reef socio-ecological systems.
The Gender Policy is the overarching document for the GFCR, its principles and objectives aligning with both GFCR instruments (the UN Fund and the Equity Fund), while each fund will implement the policy according to its operational needs. It is introduced with a view to ensuring that all convening agents (CAs) and co-implementers for GFCR-financed activities have the systems in place to mainstream gender, that is to systematically analyse and address the specific needs and priorities of both women and men in GFCR-financed programmes and interventions.
