Great Reef Census

Citizen scientists will be trained to analyse coral reef images captured during in-water surveys.

Coral Bleaching Awareness Month reminds us that reefs rarely fail out of sight. They fail unmonitored. With 84% of the world's reef area hit by bleaching-level heat stress in the last global event (NOAA), the need for reef data across the Coral Triangle has never been greater.

Together with WWF, Cotton On Foundation, and Citizens of the Reef, anyone can turn screen time into reef science by analysing survey images from the Sulu-Sulawesi Seascape, helping target restoration where it matters most. Organisations can also bring this into their CSR and sustainability programmes through guided employee sessions.

Now, until the end of October, citizen scientists will be trained to analyse coral reef images captured during in-water surveys, helping scientists better understand reef composition and health across the Sulu-Sulawesi Seascape. The insights generated will support more informed conservation decisions, enabling targeted reef restoration and other interventions to safeguard these critical ecosystems.

Anyone with a smartphone / computer and internet connection can contribute. You can be a citizen scientist now:
