Reef Futures Collaboration: Key Findings

The Reef Futures project conducted research on coral reef systems to understand five ecosystem services: biomass production, nutrient cycling, carbon cycling, cultural value, and nutrition value.

Key findings include:

• Development of metrics for biomass production and turnover
• Determining factors influencing carbonate excretion rates by fish
• Assessing nutrient cycling and storage variability
• Studying the relationship between aesthetic attractiveness and conservation needs of reef fish
• Creating a fish nutrient composition database for combating malnutrition,
• Examining the impacts of climate change and overfishing on fisheries' ability to support food security.

These findings contribute valuable insights for climate-smart management policies, conservation planning, and addressing the challenges faced by coral reefs and fisheries.
