Women with Vision
Women in rural Fiji lead coral conservation for a blue future.
Safeguarding the ocean for future generations is a shared responsibility and a matter of global urgency. For the women of Korolevu-i-wai district, half measures are no longer an option. The future is here – it’s bright, and it’s blue.
In 2002, the four traditional villages of Vatuolalai, Votua, Namada, and Tagaqe along Fiji’s Coral Coast created the Korolevu-i-wai Locally Marine Managed Area (LMMA) to preserve and protect their traditional fishing grounds.
Women’s Role in Conservation:
Women have played a crucial role in establishing the LMMA by:
- Helping to decide LMMA rules
- Assisting in environmental projects (waste management, water system improvements)
- Playing an active role in enforcement & compliance
- Conducting research to monitor the fishing ground
