Dr. Jordan Ruiz-Toquica is a Colombian marine biologist specializing in microbiology and coral reef health. His research focuses on developing probiotic-based strategies to enhance coral resilience to environmental stress and understanding microbiome dynamics in resilient coral species. In Fall 2024, Dr. Ruiz-Toquica joined UNCW to support the development of probiotic treatments for protecting corals from stony coral tissue loss disease (SCTLD). He also investigates the potential of crustose coralline algae-associated bacteria to combat antimicrobial-resistant pathogens.
