Enhancing Women’s Role in Marine Conservation and the Blue Economy

Workshop Highlights Women’s Leadership in Marine Environment Conservation and the Blue Economy in Aqaba

UNDP, in collaboration with ASEZA, organized a capacity-building workshop titled “Enhancing Women’s Role in Marine Conservation and the Blue Economy” under the Global Fund for Coral Reefs (GFCR) Programme.

The workshop brought together representatives from women’s associations across Aqaba, along with participants from community-based organizations, environmental groups, and local institutions, marking a significant step toward strengthening women’s engagement in the environmental and economic sectors of the coastal region.

The event aimed to enhance women's participation in marine conservation and blue economy initiatives by providing a platform for knowledge exchange, skills development, and dialogue on integrating gender equality into environmental and economic activities. Participants explored practical ways to increase women’s involvement in marine tourism, coastal community services, sustainable environmental products, and initiatives that contribute to the protection of Aqaba’s marine ecosystems.

The workshop featured enriching presentations and interactive discussions led by experts from UNDP and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), focusing on gender-inclusive approaches to environmental management and sustainable coastal development. Speakers highlighted the importance of empowering women as key actors in conservation efforts, recognizing their vital role in community leadership and sustainable livelihood opportunities.

A group exercise encouraged participants to collaboratively identify new opportunities for women-led initiatives within the blue economy. Ideas ranged from eco-friendly tourism services to community awareness campaigns, marine-based crafts, and participation in citizen-science monitoring efforts.

The workshop concluded with recommendations to strengthen women’s leadership in marine conservation, enhance institutional support, and promote gender-responsive planning within the broader framework of the GFCR programme in Aqaba.
