Overview
Indonesia’s coral reefs, located in the heart of the Coral Triangle, are among the largest, most diverse, and resilient in the world.
The Terumbu Karang Sehat Indonesia (TeKSI) Programme has established two main objectives: a) diversifying sustainable revenue streams to the MPA network to ensure effective protection of critical coral reef ecosystems and the prevention of destructive fishing; and b) investing in the marine tourism industry to ensure it is better managed, associated threats to reefs are reduced, and Papuan communities’ benefit. In Palau Sumba, the programme seeks to transform the rapidly growing seaweed mariculture industry to demonstrate coral-positive, equitable, and profitable models that can be replicated nationally, per the ambition of the Indonesian Government. Across both regions, the programme focuses on the direct incubation of scalable reef-positive enterprise investments.
The KORALESTARI programme is the second GFCR programme in Indonesia. It aims to tackle unsustainable fishing and aquaculture, uncontrolled coastal development, land and marine pollution, climate change impacts, and invasive species, all of which contribute to the declining health of coral reefs in Indonesia. The programme operates in three priority areas: Berau in East Kalimantan, Savu Sea in East Nusa Tengarra, and Natuna Sea, west of Borneo. To tackle these drivers of coral reef degradation, KORALESTARI is seeking to develop innovative finance mechanisms, improve coral reef conservation, support bankable reef-positive projects that advance the livelihoods of reef-dependent communities, and restore and recover coral reefs after major shocks, maintaining climate resilience.
The Blue Finance facility is a targeted USD 35m impact loan facility designed to provide up-front and early-stage impact financing to reef-positive businesses that strengthen the Blue Economy within Marine Protected Areas in Indonesia, the Philippines, Tanzania, and Cabo Verde.
