Coral reef ecosystems in the Red Sea are critical for biodiversity conservation, local livelihoods, and private sector development, particularly in the tourism and fisheries sectors. These ecosystems support a wide range of marine species, serve as natural barriers that protect coastlines, and provide the foundation for economic activity in Egypt’s coastal governorates. However, these vital systems are under severe threat from climate change, pollution, unsustainable development, and other stressors. The degradation of coral reefs undermines biodiversity, disrupts nature-based livelihoods, and increases the exposure of private and public investments to risk. Insurance and risk finance mechanisms can help conserve biodiversity, strengthen livelihoods, and unlock private investment by reducing the financial risks linked to ecosystem loss and climate impacts.

In collaboration with commercial and development banks and insurance companies, this financial mechanism explore the options to develop financial and insurance products that can be combined with investments and other blended finance tools being promoted in this project to better build the ecosystem of reef-positive enterprise. Insurance products could include for example parametric insurance for rapid containment of oil or gas discharges from offshore rigs or ships.
