Aquaculture Practices

Traditional shrimp farming practices have been linked to land-based pollution, mangrove deforestation, and increased macroalgae on reefs, all of which threaten the health of the Mesoamerican Reef. Royal Mayan Shrimp Farms (RMSF), holding the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) certification, implemented a Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS) that recycles 100% of its water and avoids environmental discharge. This positions the farm as a leader in environmentally responsible shrimp farming in the region.

The project has leveraged the financial tools and technical support developed by MAR+Invest’s Transactional Services team, as detailed in the attached case study. This initiative not only stabilizes and revitalizes a critical sector for Belize’s economy but also serves as a model for replicating sustainable shrimp farming across the region, demonstrating how reef-positive business can align economic recovery with marine conservation.
